At lunch, I left my office and went to the little café around the corner. Bailey met me there so we could go over some critical plans she said couldn’t wait until later. I had just sat down at the little bistro table when the chimes above the door jingled, catching my attention. She had been prattling on and on about an engagement that absolutely had to be attended, and I had tuned out completely when I locked stares with…who else?

Kyle.

Was he following me?

Of course, the café was a block from our office and also a very common spot for city employees to have lunch. When I did a quick scan of the place, there were at least four other tables hosting people I recognized.

He did his business at the counter and then made a beeline for our table.

“Can I talk to you for a minute?” he asked quietly.

“No, you may not. I’m very busy at the moment,” I answered without looking up to him.

“It’ll just take a minute.” He stared at me, clearly with no intention of leaving without talking to me first.

“Excuse me. This will take less than a minute,” I said to Bailey, and then I stormed out the front door. This time the chime above the door sounded like a siren belting instead of a pleasant lullaby.

“Dude. Why? I’m having a business meeting in there. So embarrassing.” I swung my whole body toward him, and he ducked back like I might hit him.

“And what you pulled in Carter’s office wasn’t?”

“You had that coming.”

“How do you figure?”

I tilted my head to the side. “Clearly you were trying to do an end run for his endorsement.”

“An end run? How so? I don’t have to run my campaign strategy by you first.” He shook his head in disbelief.

I just stammered. Because he was right. Fuck. He didn’t owe me any type of explanation. Or consideration. At all.

“I’m sorry.” I hated those words more than any others, but I had to say them. “I was out of line. It was immature of me to act that way. Although I didn’t really do anything, per se. Except maybe add a little sway to the moneymaker when I walked away.” I thumbed over my shoulder and tried for a sheepish grin.

“Yeah, thanks to that sway, I had to sit and talk to the mayor with a fucking hard-on for twenty minutes. Pretty sure he was in the same fucking boat.” His eyes regained their spark as he spoke, and I knew we were back in peaceful territory.

“Ewwww.” I shuddered for extra effect.

He cocked his head to the side. “XY chromosome.”

I heaved in a breath.

“You owe me for that stunt,” he said matter-of-factly.

“You’re insane,” I fired back in the same emotionless tone.

“I’m coming over tonight.”

“No. You. Are. Not.”

“Eight o’clock. Keep the door unlocked.” We locked eyes, daring one another to chicken out.

“No. Kyle, I’m serious. No. We agreed.” I had to keep my head on straight.

He shrugged as if it were all so simple.
